Two years ago I was invited into Baird & Warner to present myself & services as Socially Steph. πŸ‘‹ “Socially Steph is going to present in 10 minutes,” she said over the mic. I sat there laughing out loud (LOL πŸ˜‚ ) with the agents whom I was about to teach Instagram Stories & Facebook Ads too. I couldn’t believe something was coming to life here. It felt like a business was truly being born & indeed it was.

I walked out of there confident, happy & excited. I had my very first Real Estate client and that morning I can still remember the feeling of truly CREATING something on my own.

Every Monday, I taught my group fitness class at LA Fitness at the time. This is what I call my “happy hour” πŸ˜ƒ because it truly is one of the best things in the world to uplift people’s mood, spirit, mindset & health. It’s a huge passion of mine and led me to create ELEV8workout.

Later that evening, I’ll never forget it or the text I received from my Dad at 10:47pm. “Steph, come to the hospital. I don’t think Grandpa is going to make it.”

My Grandpa had been fighting stage 4 prostate cancer for 7+ years and he was the definition of true strength. He had fought hard not only in his own business at Chicago Studio City, but for his life. Every day.

It was hard to think that Monday, June 26th would be the last day I ever saw him. The last minutes with him felt like a blurr and I caught myself thinking about life as I watched my Grandpa slowly pass and leave me.

My biggest inspiration, one of my greatest teachers, listeners & advice givers. Someone whom I loved so deeply & made me feel like the biggest brightest light in the room – was gone. I held onto his hand tightly as he gave his last breath. I was in awe that earlier that day was the highest of highs and then I reached my lowest of lows (ever).

Socially Steph was born the same day my Grandpa died & every client win, every time I self doubt myself, every blessing that comes my way I think of him. He is there for me every step of this journey and that is something I am grateful for. Before he passed he left me with some wise words when I was feeling stuck. He said, Steph,

What inspired/motivated you to start your business?

My motivation to start my business was based off of a childhood trauma. I grew up in a single-parent household. My Mother’s a nurse and my Father’s a factory worker, so we didn’t have much money growing up. I moved out of my Mom’s to my Dad’s on my 18th birthday & that decision equaled leaving my half-brother behind. This left me with a broken heart. His situation was worse than mine & he didn’t have help with food or clothes like I did. Since then I vowed to never leave another person behind. I do that through my styling services.

Who do you service and why? 

I service entrepreneurs & speakers, both male and female. I chose this niche because I noticed a giant hole in the market. There’s no one serving these individuals. Another big reason is because I consider myself in the same bracket of people & essentially I want to serve my people. 

What does style mean to you?

Style to me is personality. My style describes my personality. I wear it on my body like armor because it gives me the confidence I need to conquer my day, my week, & my life.

How does style make an impact on someone in their life or business? 

Style is different for everyone. Once I found my style, I was a whole new person & gained self-esteem & confidence which in turn gave me the courage to start my business. For others, style could be their brand, their armor (like me) or anything they want it to be. It can benefit them more if they use it to their advantage like when you dress nice for a job interview, you feel confident so you nail the interview, right?! Style can give you confidence if that’s something you’re lacking.

What’s important when it comes to style?


Comfort & fit are the two most common goals when it comes to style. You don’t want to buy a bunch of clothes that are so uncomfortable that you want to take them off immediately. You also don’t want clothes that don’t fit you properly because then you’ll never wear them & again that’s wasted money & time you could have spent buying the right thing. OR if you have a personal stylist/personal shopper, like me, then you don’t have to worry about it! You can pay them to do the shopping FOR YOU as they will have your preferences & measurements & you now have more time to spend with family or build your empire.

What’s the greatest pain point you solve for clients?

TIME. Entrepreneurs & speakers are constantly traveling, in meetings, working on projects, etc and they don’t have time to shop for themselves. My client Shay Rowbottom is a great example, she has no time & hates shopping anyway. Does this sound like you, too?

What helped you gain business since starting? 

I started my business in November 2019 so it’s still fairly new. However, having the courage & belief in myself to make my dreams reality is what has helped me the most. If I didn’t flip my mindset I would have never started my own business & lived the life I truly desired. 

How do you leverage social media?


I use LinkedIn as my main platform to connect with & gain clients since my target audience is there. Facebook groups to find potential clients. Instagram, Twitter & YouTube are helpful sometimes, but not nearly as much.

What social media platform has helped you the most in business? 

LinkedIn, hands down.

What advice would you give to someone looking to own their style? 


If you’re looking to own your style you have to be open minded & not give a f*ck what others think because it is most important to be yourself & not who society wants you to be. This includes your appearance, the only people that look like a barbie doll are those that can afford botox. Style can help you love yourself like it did for me & is part of my why. My mission is to help thousands of others gain their confidence through clothing!

Tell us about virtual styling.  


Virtual Styling is fairly new to the market & each one is different. There are two main types of virtual styling – there is the stitch-fix way & then there is the freelance way. I have worked in both. I prefer freelance simply because I really get to know my clients on a deeper level, I don’t just provide them with outfits & say ‘good luck!’I run my business using a 3-4 step process, the first step is a discovery call, we have to have chemistry or some sort of connection for the relationship to work, during this meeting we discuss their answers to a style questionnaire that they receive via email after scheduling a meeting.The second step is the review of the lookbook. This generally occurs between 3 days & week depending on the clients schedule, it takes me 2-3 days max to put the lookbook together. During this meeting we discuss the lookbook to be approved for purchase of the clothing or just the lookbook. We will also discuss if there needs to be any changes to the lookbook, which if there are, that will equal the 4th step as the third step is meant for invoicing, & tracking of the shipments. The 4th step is the final review of the lookbook after changes.

What’s been the most challenging part of running your business thus far? 

MYSELF. What I mean by that is that I have been in the ’employee/closed mindset’ & I have been working towards the ‘growth mindset.’ I’ve allowed myself to get in my own way & sabotage my own success. Why? Probably because I dream big & want a life of luxury & I haven’t been considering myself worthy of that success & life. Until I do, I will not be successful.

Alright everyone, I’m going to be honest. These are legit! Plus, you’re sneaking a veggie in there and this makes me want to eat the whole pan (don’t do that tho!) The zucchini is actually incredibly moist so if you put it in baked goods like these it’s delicious and you can’t even taste it!!

This is from True Roots cookbook, but I recently swapped out the almond butter for PB and I like them 10x better. Here it is & let me know if you’re a fan:

Zucchini Blondies Recipe

Makes: 16
Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

1 cup creamy almond butter (I used no sugar added PB)
1 egg
1/2 tsp pink Himalayan salt (This salt is KEY! πŸ”‘ )
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup coconut sugar
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract (I like to do 1 tsp!)
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (I love love LOVE Lilly’s Sugar Free)
1 large zucchini, grated

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line 8Γ—8 baking dish with parchment paper, or grease with coconut oil or butter.

In a large bowl, mix the almond butter, egg, salt, baking soda, coconut sugar and vanilla until combined. Fold in chocolate chips or zucchini. Pour into dish and press down to spread.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes (mine took 30) or until golden brown and toothpick comes out clean.

Let cool and enjoy!! 😊

If you never try, you’ll never know. A few years ago when I was working in corporate I thought I wanted to change careers and be a travel writer.

This idea of travel & writing was weighing heavy on my mind. The only way I knew I’d get a taste of this was to actually try it myself. I booked my first ever solo travel trip to Denver and I used this as a way to see if this is something I can picture myself doing long term. I did my best to envision what this career life would be like. Constant travel, writing about different destinations, and getting paid opportunities to travel seemed so fun to me.

However, once I put myself into “pretending” to be a travel writer I realized a few things immediately. 1. I don’t want to document every thing I do while traveling because I want to enjoy the moments traveling freely. 2. Traveling is a helluva lot of work and sitting in airports ain’t my thang. Ya feel me? I’ll just stick to vacations.

Shortly after that trip I ended up back on the beach in Fort Lauderdale where I came up with the idea to create SociallySteph.com. Initially, I thought I’d weave in my travels to this site along with style & fitness. A few months ago I created a profile with RewardSTYLE & LikeToKnowIt. I was excited to be able to leverage this platform and pair it with @SociallySteph.

Style is something I personally love, but I don’t want it to be something I am having to share constantly. To be successful in any area of life in business you need consistency & love for what you’re creating. If style happens to fall into what I do great but it’s not my main focus. I believe the only way you’ll ever figure out what you essentially want to do and who you want to become is to simply try. Try it all. Do the things that light you up and in those moments you’ll only gain more clarity and get closer to that AHA moment where you’re like, THIS IS IT! What have you been longing to try but push to the side?

Now since we have a little more time to pause. It’s a perfect time to start to do more things you love or have been putting off. For me, that’s sharing stories. So, meet my Grandma G. Growing up she was sure to bring me joy while always cutting my PB&J into tiny squares, playing with me on the beach in Naples every year & always putting so much thought and care into her gifts. She’s a wonderful cook and I can say I am guilty of over consuming all her goodies anytime she makes something. She also is a great listener and someone who has truly wanted to see me do all the things I love. I am so lucky to have someone like her in my life. We can all agree she brings everyone together.

I remember one day I was sitting in a parking lot and had some extra time to spare before a meeting when I dialed my Grandma G. We were on the topic of life happiness and I always love hearing others perspectives. This is some simple advice to apply to your own life right now:

These are my notes I wrote down from our conversation & some of my own thoughts I’ve added in parentheses.

1. Try to be happy as always (because it’s a choice & only you have the power to make yourself truly your happiest. Don’t rely on anyone else for your own happiness)

2. You can’t replace fun times (very true, enjoy every moment & really relish it as much as you can. You only have the present moment in which you are in right now)

3. Smile at people when you’re out walking (πŸ˜ƒ this is always a great idea!)

4. Count your blessings (you’d be surprised at how blessed you truly are)

5. Show kindness to everyone (this is key πŸ”‘, kill people with kindness)

6. Treat people the way you want to be treated (nothing more to say here)

7. Set goals and you’ll be happy (goals are what make life great. You may not always achieve the goal in which you wanted too, it might take longer time or maybe the goal changes in itself, but setting the goal is the first step to starting)

8. …. just read the 10 commandments and life will be good

Sometimes challenges you face in life help you to find what really makes you shine, on the inside & out. I’ll never forget stepping foot into The Dailey Method studio in Elmhurst. It was like all the stress of the world & my parents recent divorce melted away and the positive environment gave me that safe place to be all I ever wanted to be. Joyful. It was here that I felt empowered & uplifted in times that felt so broken & confusing. It was here I made positive and valuable connections with people where I left craving more intention & purpose in my life.

If you’re reading this & we haven’t met personally, well I hope we do, one day. But if you didn’t catch on social media yet I am a born optimist, seriously. I have a tendency to look on the bright side even when faced with challenges in my personal life. I personally believe that’s the best way to live because bad things are bound to get thrown our way. It’s a strength of mine I love to carry and share it with the universe because I believe everyone can use more positivity in their own life. In High School teachers used to stop and ask, “How are you so happy? “You’re always smiling.” As Lady Gaga would say, “baby I was born this way!” haha! πŸ˜† It’s partially due to growing up in a divorce lifestyle (another post for another day.) Divorce somewhat teaches you that hardships make you stronger and the best we can do is stay positive & use it to better ourself. I wouldn’t change a thing in my life because it’s built my character and I hope you can walk away from this post feeling more confident about your upbringing or life & knowing that you can shape who you want to become.

Remember: You don’t have to allow anything or anyone to drag you down.
